Origin of this Mantra
Sukracharya, guru of the demons, has performed a penance to impress Lord shiva by hanging upside down from a tree for twenty years with a fire lit beneath and smoke blowing out. It indeed impressed Lord Shiva and Shiva taugh him this Mantra. It later passed on to others.
What is the meaning of Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra?
Aum or Om an absolute reality is the mystic name for the Hindu Trimurti. It represents the union of the three gods, viz Brahma, Vishnu and Mahadev, which is another name of Shiva. The three sounds also symbolize the three Vedas (Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda).
Om is a positive accent and energizes whatever we say after it. That is why all mantras begin with OM. Reciting of OM enables a person to gains access to the powers of the universe
Tryambak can be referred as three amba or Shakti
‘Iccha Shakti’ (Will power)
‘Kriya shakti’ (power of work)
‘Gyana shakti’ (power of wisdom).
These three shaktis are the creators of this whole world, and the one who has these three is called tryambak.
Yajamahe means ‘performing yagya’. Yagya is performed to establish a connection with almighty, which is the origin of light, nectar and life by sacrificing and offerings.
‘Sugandhim’ is use with reference of fragrance of flower which flows in all directions. Similarly, He is The Supreme God is present in all the bhutas, in the three Gunas, in the ten indriyas, in all the devas and the ganas. God is spreading His fragrance to transfer the joy within him.
Pushti + vardhnam = pushtivardhanam
Pushti can be referred to Maya, Shakti and nature. And the one who enhances the pushti is called pustivardhanam. God is the creator of all beings who has created the entire creation starting from mahatatva to the individual parts
