Khatu shyam ji is linked with medieval Mahabharata. From childhood Barbareek was a great warrior and brave. He was master in the art of fighting, Lord Shiva, pleased with him, gave him the three infallible Arrows and Agni Dev gave him the three arrows as boon. Since then he was known as ‘TEEN BAAN DHARI’, i.e. bearer of three arrows.
Story of Khatu Shyam
During his childhood, he came to know that there will be great war between Pandavas and Kauravas. He than told her mother Ahilyawati that he too wants to fight in that war. He said that he will fight for ones who are losing. Her mother resisted but has to give up. Then he left for the battlefield. Lord Krishna knew that he is very strong and can himself alone defeat Pandavas. Lord Krishna then moved to him and ask him to do few things.

Krishna disguising himself as a brahmin, asked Barbarika to examine his strength. He asked Barbarik to show what is his strength. Then Barbarik told Krishna about his three arrows. He told him that from the first arrow he can mark everything that he wants to destroy. And from the third he can destroy all those things he marked, and then it will return to the quiver.
Then Krishna asked what second arrow will do. Then he replied that he can mark everything that he wants to save with the second arrow and third arrow will destroy everything not marked.
Knowing this Krishna thought that, he can make Kauravas win. As he has given promise to his mother that he will fight for the one who is losing, Krishna thought that he will foght for the Kauravas. So Krishna asked him to donate his head. He without any fear gave him his head. Since then, he is known as “Sheesh Ka Daani“.
On his request, Krishna put his head on a mountain from where he can witness the whole war. He was the one, who witnessed Mahabharata from start to end.
Upon asking, who is the main hero of Mahabharata, he replied that, he has seen only two things:
1. Krishna’s Sudarshan Chakra, and,
2. Draupadi’s Khappar, in which she is drinking blood.
