God Hanuman,who aided Lord Rama in his expedition against evil forces, is one of the most popular idols in the Hindu pantheon. As per popular belief, he is son of Anjani and Pawan (god of wind). Believed to be an avatar of Lord Shiva, Hanuman is worshipped as a symbol of physical strength, perseverance and devotion. Hanuman’s tale in the epic Ramayana – where he is assigned the responsibility to locate Rama’s wife Sita abducted by Ravana, the demon king of Lanka.
He has exhibited astonishing physical strength and worked many miracles. His valour, wisdom, knowledge of the scriptures and superhuman strength attracted everybody who came near him. He had extraordinary skill in warfare. Hanmanji was a bachelor (brahamachari) and is worshipped in all the temples of India. Every temple of Shri Ram contains an icon of Hanuman. Worship of Sri Rama is complete only with the worship of Hanuman. References to Hanuman in classical literature could be found as early as those of 5th to 1st century BC in Panini’s Astadhyayi, Abhiseka Nataka, Pratima Nataka and Raghuvamsa (Kalidasa).
